1. Line as Shape

For this post, I picked this sketch by webcomic artist Andrew Hussie. Even without colors, it's pretty easy to see the different parts of the sketch and the characters. Obviously, if these characters were real, they wouldn't be outlined in black, but the lines still give the characters shape.
